Higher investment returns and a larger salary can help you reach financial independence. The main variable in the usual FIRE timeline, though, is your savings rate: the percentage of take-home pay you keep rather than spend.
Why it dominates
A higher savings rate changes both sides of the calculation. You add to the portfolio faster while living on less, which also lowers the portfolio target.
Income and investment returns only push one end. Savings rate pushes both. That dual-direction advantage is the structural reason a modest earner who saves half their pay can reach financial independence faster than a high earner who saves 10% of a much larger paycheck. The math doesn't care how big the number looks if most of it walks back out the door.
Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez gave the idea its philosophical base in Your Money or Your Life, describing spending as an exchange of life energy. Jacob Lund Fisker developed the arithmetic in Early Retirement Extreme. Pete Adeney, writing as Mr. Money Mustache, brought the table to a larger audience in “The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Early Retirement.” FIRE readers still use it.
The math, roughly
The relationship between savings rate and years to financial independence is steeper than most people expect. The table below uses Mr. Money Mustache's original assumptions: starting from zero, roughly 5% real annual returns on investments, and the 4% safe withdrawal rate established by the Trinity Study (Cooley, Hubbard, and Walz, 1998) — itself built on William Bengen's 1994 research in Determining Withdrawal Rates Using Historical Data.

Moving from a 10% to a 50% savings rate reduces the modeled timeline from roughly 51 years to 17. The timeline falls by more than half because more money is invested while the spending target also falls.
The table assumes you start from zero; if you already have savings, you're ahead of these timelines. It uses a long-run average return and roughly constant spending. Rising spending weakens the savings rate, and the averages smooth over market volatility and the sequence risk that matters in early retirement. Use the table as an illustration, not a retirement date.
What this means in practice
The savings-rate lens reframes every financial decision you make.
What you keep matters more than the raise by itself. If income rises 15% and spending rises 12%, the savings rate changes little. Saving the full raise increases the rate and shortens the modeled timeline, with the size of the change depending on your starting point.
A recurring expense affects both sides too. A $200-per-month reduction adds $200 to the amount available to invest each month and reduces annual spending by $2,400. At a 4% withdrawal rate, that lowers the portfolio target by $60,000.
Frugality is a method, not the purpose. The point is not to live poorly. A higher savings rate can make paid work optional sooner and leave more time for other priorities. How far to take it is a separate decision.
None of this means income doesn't matter
A higher income makes a high savings rate easier to reach. When housing, food, transportation, and insurance consume most of a modest paycheck, moving above a 20% or 25% savings rate can require a real cut in living standards. A higher income leaves more money above those fixed costs.
Income and savings rate work together. Income creates room; the savings rate shows how much of that room reaches the portfolio and how much the eventual portfolio must support.
